Automatic Systems
Automatic systems permit peritoneal dialysis during sleep
In Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis (APD), a special machine known as a cycler takes over the exchange of dialysis fluid overnight. Patients connect themselves to the machine before going to bed and, several times during the night, it automatically replaces the dialysate after just a short period in the abdomen. The number of times dialysis solution needs to be replaced as well as the volume of dialysis solution is determined by a doctor and programmed into the cycler. During the day, some patients can go without dialysis solution in their abdomen what is called Nocturnal Intermittent Peritoneal Dialysis (NIPD). Alternatively, the abdomen can be filled with fresh dialysis fluid in the morning that remains until the evening. This type of treatment is known as Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD). Patients in both types of treatments can go about their lives without taking the extra time to change bags.
Fresenius Medical Care Cyclers: safe, quiet and easy-to-use
sleep.safe, PD-NIGHT, Freedom Cycler, 90/2 and Newton IQ are modern systems offered by Fresenius Medical Care for Automatic Peritoneal Dialysis. User-friendly software makes them simple and safe to use. They are also easy to transport and allow patients to sleep peacefully during treatment. sleep.safe complies with the most modern technological standards – a hydraulic pump performs the fluid exchange, which is controlled by several pressure sensors. A microprocessor monitors the treatment steps, bags are connected automatically and an integrated heater warms the dialysis fluid before it is injected into the patient’s abdominal cavity. A special version of sleep.safe was designed for the treatment of children. PD-Night is a simplified system that is especially easy to use. Gravity is used to exchange the fluids.
