St. Wendel
Highly-automated production of "artificial kidneys"
At the St. Wendel, Saarland, facility Fresenius Medical Care develops and manufactures life-saving products for the treatment of patients with chronic kidney failure. These include dialyzers (artificial kidneys), blood lines and systems for peritoneal dialysis (dialysis via the peritoneum).
Furthermore, adsorbers for the treatment of blood outside the body are developed and manufactured in St. Wendel.
Altogether more than 1,600 employees work at this location including approximately 150 engineers and scientists. Highly-automated production technologies and well-trained employees ensure a high level of quality. The medical-technical products therefore enjoy high esteem and the confidence of doctors and patients all over the world.
St. Wendel is Fresenius' first – and at the same time the most important – factory for dialyzer production. Large-scale production of the first polysulfone dialyzers started in 1985 at this factory, which has belonged to the company since the mid-1970s. Artificial kidneys made from this material are especially effective in removing metabolic waste products from the blood of patients. A new FX class dialyzer with the further optimized polysulfone membrane Helixone is also manufactured in St. Wendel. Production processes developed by our engineers in St. Wendel are used in Fresenius manufacturing facilities all over the world.
